Feature Friday with Brian Billings
Happy Friday!! I swear the weeks are going so fast. I am amped up for this weeks feature post. I have been waiting to post this one as Brian wanted to wait till after his meet he just had. I also wanted to congratulate him on his first meet. I contacted him to write a guest post and let me tell you he over delivered, take a few minutes to read it and let Brian and I know what you think in the comment section below.

How far are you willing to go to reach your goals?
Everyone’s initial answer is “I will do whatever it takes” but we know that’s not the truth. The bottom line is most people are not willing to push themselves to the limit and see what they can really achieve. Here are a few things I have learned about striving towards your goals and what it really takes to succeed.
A little about me, I was a soccer player for most of my life. I was lucky enough to train with the Columbus Crew for several years and played four years of collegiate soccer. Lifting was never a major concern of mine, until my soccer days had come to an end. I needed something new, I found power lifting. I was very fortunate to meet J.L. Holdsworth and develop a friendship with him. J.L. is a very successful power lifter and as someone who has held several World Records was the perfect person to learn from. J.L. introduced me to Dave Tate, Jim Wendler, Chuck Vogelpohl, Matt Wenning and many other great lifters. In about 18 months of training J.L. has helped me make great strides towards achieving my goals. I have gained 80 lbs while staying under 14% body fat and gotten tremendously stronger. I recently squatted 750 in my first meet, narrowly missing 800 by losing my balance. This is great considering I couldn’t take 135 to parallel when I started. I have made great changes to my body and added strength, but I’m still not where I want to be and writing this helps to serve as a reminder of the things I need to do as well.
The first thing is define your goal. This sounds simple but getting stronger is not a good goal that is too broad. Be specific! How will you look? How will you feel? What do you see, smell, and hear at the exact moment you achieve your goal? Paint the most concise picture possible and give this picture a date on which you will reach this goal. Now that you have a perfect image in your head keep it to yourself, the only people you will share this with are the people who will be helping you and the ones you hold dear. Other people will question your motivation or discourage you. Protect your dream! When someone asks you what you’re training for that is where you use you old definition, tell them “im training to get stronger” and leave it at that.
Seek out the best, if your goal is to be a bodybuilder, seek out the most knowledgeable and successful bodybuilder you can find. Whatever arena your goal lies in seek the best out, plain and simple they will know exactly what it takes to get to the top. This is perhaps the most important part, SHUT UP and LISTEN. If you are lucky enough to find some one to help you on your quest, listen to what they have to say. Asking questions is great and shows that you want to learn why you do certain things, but wait until they are done speaking. Make sure you pose your questions in a constructive manner. Do not take their help for granted, because I guarantee there are tons of hungry people waiting to get their hands on a good coach. If you’re late, inconsistent and making excuses they will move on and work with someone else. I cannot stress enough how important finding someone with good experience to help you is. They have been where you are before, they have experience and most likely the knowledge passed down from their mentor or coach. Learn everything you can, because although their experiences are unique you will find many of them applicable to your own training on your way to success.
Have a plan; I cannot stress how important having a plan is to your success. Work with your coach or mentor to develop the most effective way to accomplish your goals. The plan also needs to be very specific, including: what days you will train, prioritizing weaknesses, dietary changes based on training goals, pace, etc. The more specific you are the better, when something isn’t working you can tweak it, instead of scraping the whole plan and starting from scratch. This is a learning process, not every plan will yield the results you want, but knowing what doesn’t work for you can be just as valuable as knowing what does. Your plan should be short in comparison to the time it will take to reach you goals. Breaking your goals down into more manageable periods will help you to realize the progress you’re making along the way.
Up to this point achieving your goals sounds easy, right? Wrong, this is the most difficult part. You have your mental image in place, a good coach and plan, now it’s time to get to work. You have to make your goal the most important thing in your life! Everything you do should be related to how it will impact you achieving your goals. Are you willing to give up hanging out with your friends or going to the movies with your girlfriend to get extra sleep? Miss your favorite T.V. show because you need to prepare your meals for tomorrow? Get out of bed early to eat a good breakfast? The fact is that most people are not willing to do these things but these are the things that the guy holding the first place trophy is doing while you’re screwing around. Every meal, workout, and hour of sleep you miss should eat away at your insides. Because somewhere somebody is doing all of the right things, and when you compete against them they will beat you. This is the mentality that you must harness in order to be great.
I want to give thanks to J.L. Holdsworth my best friend and a great coach, Dave Tate, Dan Dague, everyone I have trained with at Elite and Lexen and my family for all of their support. Also thank you to Matt for allowing me to share with all of you. This article in no way encompasses everything you will need to do to be reach your goals, but these are what I believe to be several key components. Remember this will not happen over night, you will have to develop a system that works for you. Our lives are dynamic, what worked last month might not work this month you have to be able to adapt and continue being consistent. Good Luck, the sky is the limit!
Again I wanted to thank Brian for this kick ass article! If you want to learn more about him search for him on Facebook(he is one of my friends) also check out EliteFTS.com and Leanxtreme.com
Also do not forget to leave your comments below.
Dedicated to your success,

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Believe it or not a great way to stop snoring–and stop sleep apnea–is to take up the digeridoo! The deep vibration of the sound of the digeridoo and the muscles you are toning as you play it decreases the slack in the tissues in your throat that cover or partially cover your throat opening causing the snoring and apnea. It really works, it has no side effects and you learn a new, fun mad skill all at the same time! Try it….what do you have to lose?

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It?s the old what goes around comes around routine. Did you acquired lots of links and I see lots of trackbacks??

Great post full of useful tips! My site is fairly new and I am also having a hard time getting my readers to leave comments. Analytics shows they are coming to the site but I have a feeling “nobody wants to be first”.

Hey Boss – its a nice blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a pretty nice platform you are using. I’m currently using Wordpress for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend me about it?
